Anti peptic ulcer activity of tea leaves was checked in cysteamine induced duodenal ulcer and ethanol, hydrochloric acid, aspirin, indomethacin, swimming stress, pyloric ligation and restraint induced gastric ulcer models in albino rats. Ranitidine, a conventional anti peptic ulcer drug, was used for comparison. Results showed that tea leaves powder could reduce ulcer index significantly (p<0.001) in all the experimental ulcer models studied and the results were comparable to that of ranitidine.Keywords

Problems: Search for new drugs of gastric ulcer. Experimental approach: Anti gastric ulcer activity of Amaranthus spinosus Linn. in aspirin induced gastric ulcers was studied in rats. Findings: Results showed that Amaranthus spinosus Linn. leaves significantly reduced ulcer index induced by aspirin. The plant leaves produced gastric anti secretory effect by decreasing gastric volume and acidity. Elevated level of gastric pepsin during aspirin induced ulcers was found lowered by the leaves indicating its involvement in offensive mechanism in production of gastric ulcer. Leaves further increased gastric mucin which showed its gastric cytoprotective effect. The plant leaves prevented loss of gastric protein, DNA and the increased lipid peroxidation during ulceration by aspirin. Activities of the anti oxidant enzymes were enhanced during ulceration by this plant leaves. Results were comparable to that of ranitidine, a standard anti ulcer drug. Conclusion: Anti ulcerogenic activity of Amaranthus spinosus Linn. leaves was mediated through anti oxidant defense mechanism.Keywords

A compound (AC-I) was isolated from Ageratum conyzoides L. leaves. The compound had anti peptic ulcer activity in ethanol induced gastric ulcers and cysteamine induced duodenal ulcers in albino rats. Seasonal variation in concentration of the compound (AC-I) in A. conyzoides L. leaves was studied. Results showed that leaves of A. conyzoides L. for the months of July and August yielded maximum amount of the compound.Keywords

Plant Titeypati (Artemisia vulgaris L.), belongs to the family Asteraceae, is abundant in Sikkim and Darjeeling Himalayas in the middle and upper hill forest up to the height of 2000-5000 ft. Titeypati is a medicinal plant traditionally used to treat a wide range of diseases. Hepatoprotective activity of Titeypati has been noted in hepatotoxicity in rats. Seasonal variation in this effect, if any, was studied. Results showed that Titeypati leaves during the period May - June had maximum protective effect on anti tubercular drugs induced hepatotoxicity in rats.Keywords

By solvent extraction, acid hydrolysis, chromatographic experiments followed by crystallization a compound was isolated from Murrya koenigii (Linn.) Spreng Wettst leaves. The compound could exert anti thiamine activity in in vitro experiment. It was found out that 1g of the compound inactivated 31.8 mg of thiamine hydrochloride in 1 h. Effect of season on in vitro anti thiamine activity of the compound was also studied. Results showed that compound isolated from the leaves of Murrya koenigii (Linn.) Spreng Wettst of the period July - August had maximum anti thiamine activity.

In vitro antioxidant activity of chromatographically separated fractions from powdered leaves of Aastilbe rivularis buch. - Ham. Ex D. Don was studied. Antioxidant activity was measured by superoxide anion generation with help of xanthine-xanthine oxidase assay and with linoleic acid peroxidation assay as well as DPPH photometric assay. Total phenol, flavonoids, ascorbic acid and carotenoid contents in the separated fractions were also estimated. Out of five fractions separated, the third fraction had maximuum antioxidant activity which was comparable to that of known synthetic antioxidant. Antioxidant activity was related with high content of total phenol, flavonoid, ascorbic acid and carotenoids in the fraction.Keywords

Effect of season on in vitro anti oxidant activity of Aageratum conyzoides Linn (A. conyzoides L.) leaves was studied. By solvent extraction, acid hydrolysis, chromatography followed by crystallization, a compound was isolated from the leaves of Amaranthus spinosus Linn. Infra red spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance studies showed that the isolated compound was chemically 3,4 dihydroxy benzoic acid.Keywords
